FAQs

What is a battery?

A battery is a storage container of electrical energy produced by a chemical reaction.

The automotive battery provides starting power for the engine. It also supplies power to the accessories such as lights, fans and radio when the engine is not running.

When should a battery be replaced?

As soon as it shows any signs of reduced cranking performance.

For reliable starting, a guide is four years or 100,000kms.

How can I tell my battery's age?

The age of an automotive battery is usually on a label located on the top of the battery. The label will indicate the month and year the battery was sold to the reseller.

Letter - indicates the month i.e. A is January, B is February, etc.

Digit - indicates the year i.e. 0 for 2020, 1 for 2021 etc.

For example, an automotive battery date code that starts with "B1" would be February 2021.

What I need to know when choosing a new battery.

Cold Crank Amps (CCA) is the power a battery produces to start your vehicle's engine in cold conditions. The NZ standard is SAE which is rated at -18 degrees Celsius. Always choose a battery that is at least equal to the rating of the original equipment battery fitted to your vehicle when first manufactured. The higher the CCA the better the battery!

Ensure you select a battery that has a correct battery post configuration the same as the battery you are replacing.

Battery-Terminal-Assembly

Check the physical dimensions of the battery you are replacing and select a battery that will fit the battery tray in your vehicle.

What affects the life of my truck's battery?

Constant short trips may not give the battery enough time to fully recharge between starts, hence shortening the batteries overall life expectancy.

Extreme temperatures are a major contributor to battery failure. Hot temperatures as well as freezing temperatures can shorten a batteries life.

Terminal corrosion is a contributor to reduced life expectancy of a battery, so keep the terminals clean and inspect regularly. Pouring a mix of hot water and baking soda is an easy remedy to remove corrosion.

Vibration is another major contributor to premature battery failure. Ensure the battery is always secured correctly to the vehicle.

Alternator over or under charging will cause premature batter failure. If the alternator light is displayed on your dash, have your vehicle checked by an authorised repairer.

What flattens a battery overnight?

The most common cause of batteries self-discharging overnight is when a light or power accessory is left on, keys left in the ignition or a plugged-in adapter used to recharge a cell phone etc is left on, resulting in the battery being syphoned of power overnight.

Your battery can also drain overnight if there are faulty electrical components or wiring in your vehicle.

How to look after your battery

Ensure you keep your battery terminals clean and inspect regularly for corrosion. A mix of hot water and baking soda with the aid of a brush will help remove corrosion build-ups.

Keep the truck's battery secure and free from vibration. The vibration will contribute to premature battery failure.

Invest in an automotive battery charger that will maintain an optimum charge level when your vehicle is not in use for any period i.e., a week or longer.

Always keep the top of your battery clean from oil and grease as this can cause your battery to self-conduct and reduce its performance.

Never leave an automotive battery in a discharged condition for a period of 24 x hours or longer as sulphation may occur. Always recharge your battery fully as soon as possible.

Can I recycle my battery?

Yes, you can return your old spent battery to TWL who will ensure it is recycled in a safe and environmentally friendly process. Automotive lead acid batteries are up to 98% recyclable.
